The train literally crawls through the barrage, and often it would stop there in the middle of the night. Umpteen number of time as a young boy, I have sat with my head stuck against the window bars of a train compartment, staring at the water flowing through the 123 sluice gates, in the midst of the deafening noise of water.Siddhartha Mishrahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09635418734607472160noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4927748002875092736.post-60052479094986237452011-06-29T21:32:11.755-07:002011-06-29T21:32:11.755-07:003 very long days indeed! You need tremendous stamina to do that, but one must admire the endurance of the family, they sat through it all!

Thank Rahul Kumar of Pune who was driving from Pune to Sikkhim just 6 hours ahead of Mahesh - and he actually helped do the booking of the room at Golden Park Hotel in Malda.

I guess the Golden Park was an expensive hotel, but in that region good hotels are hard to come by.

One more thing about the Farakka Barrage is that it regulates the flow of Ganga water into Bangladesh and is also the basis for sharing of waters under the historic Farakka Pact between India and Bangladesh. IT has 110 sluice gates, if I got my facts correct.H V Kumarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12180834661133988172noreply@blogger.com
